I believe that most of us, and especially women, hold ourselves back in some way. Afraid to take chances, speak up, value what we want to do, value our time, and put ourselves second to others.
In “Looking Out” I see the pains and fears we hold like a broken bird in a cage, seeing the open door but not knowing how or when to step out. We protect that caged bird inside of us, shielding it from further harm.
The imagery of this piece is very personal to me. A caged bird with the door open is the best way I can portray feelings of hurt and betrayal I faced in my childhood. I kept it safe inside until it was ready to come out as an adult, which has been the most poignant turning point of my life. The very reason why I paint now is because of this stepping out, as well as the abstracted or fractured painting style.
On a broader level, I believe I am not alone. We all hold our pains close to us. My hope is that we can nourish the broken bird so it can find it’s way out.
