Mother and Child

Every life that comes into this world, women hold. Mothers charge these precious lives with love, understanding, and belonging.

I have witnessed the beauty of the mother/child relationship as a son, a father, and a grandfather- The loving and comforting bond between my mother and her son; the overwhelmingly grateful and nurturing relationship of my children with their mother; the miraculous and fulfilling relationship of my daughters with their children. This bond is truly awe-inspiring.

My sculpture, Mother and Child, is inspired by a simple sketch by Pablo Picasso. In Picasso’s sketch, a mother’s long slender hands cradle a baby close to her bosom, perfectly expressing the warmth and safety a baby experiences in the arms of their mother. Picasso’s mother and child artworks possess, in my opinion, a more sensitive quality than any of his other work. A testament to the special nature of this connection...
