The Weight of the World on Her Shoulders is an idiom often used to describe the immense pressure, responsibility, and emotional labor that women carry. This work explores that feeling—both the visible and invisible burdens that accumulate as we navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain world.
Through my work, I wanted to capture the tension that lives just beneath the surface. The frayed edges and fragmented materials mirror the internal experience of overwhelm, worry, and quiet resilience that many women hold every day. These elements represent not only stress and fatigue, but also the ways we continue to carry on despite them.
As women, we are often expected to hold many roles at once: caregiver, professional, partner, listener, organizer, nurturer. Each responsibility layers onto the next, sometimes creating a sense that the weight continues to grow heavier. In a world filled with constant information, shifting expectations, and collective uncertainty, that weight can feel especially tangible.
Textiles provide a powerful language for expressing this experience. The threads, tensions, and imperfections become metaphors for the emotional landscape of living in this moment. Fraying fibers suggest vulnerability, while the structure of the work speaks to endurance and strength.
Ultimately, this piece is not only about burden—it is also about visibility. By acknowledging the strain and complexity of these experiences, the work invites viewers to reflect on the unseen emotional labor carried by women and to recognize the resilience that exists within that weight.
