This painting grew out of my reflections on the women who have shaped my life. Repeatedly, women have inspired me to look upward – to be gentle, respond with more patience, more kindness, and more honesty about what I feel. The women in my life have shaped me not through quietness, but through their full humanity—wild and tender, emotional and wise—showing me that strength and gentleness can exist in the same breath.

Though no figure appears in the painting, the cloud becomes a metaphor for something ethereal and ever shifting in form. There is softness in it, but also scale and power—something impossible to lay hand or foot upon. Clouds are forces of nature, gathering storms that bring snow, rain, and hail. Yet they also make way for sunlight. They hold it, and reflect it.

Like clouds that gather storms or open to let the sun through, women hold many things at once—beauty and burden, tenderness and resilience. There is a quiet mystery in the strength of femininity.

The sky at sunset felt like the right language for this idea. Light moves through the form, changing its color and shape moment by moment. What it holds grows and winnows.

The title points to that act of holding—of carrying and reflecting light. It is a quiet acknowledgment of the ways the women in my life, and women more broadly, create space for growth and change, guiding the gaze upward.
